Purpose of the post
•Putting the people of Gwynedd at the centre of everything we do.
•Assist to provide an effective public library service including a provision for adults, children and young people, both individually and in groups, and including the administrative tasks to support the service for users. .
Responsibility for functions
•Staff: back-up /temporary staff occasionally;
•Stock: condition of adult and children's stock;
•Equipment: safe use of furniture, computer equipment etc;
•Money: Keep simple imprest accounts and banking money. Invoicing as required
Main duties
•Lend resources, collect fines and other payments concerning lending library resources.
•Put resources away on shelves and keep the library in an organised and tidy condition.
•Assist users with making requests, inform users that their requests have arrived, process requests. Search for items on request and process items.
•Register new users and update the records of library members.
•Keep a simple count on the number who attend library events.
•Assist users with access to Public Computers, using a scanner, photocopier or other public resources available at the library.
•Respond to enquiries over the phone or e-mail and refer enquiries and calls to other staff and/or take messages.
•Assist with arranging book displays and maintain up-to-date noticeboards.
•Assess the library stock's condition regularly to return untidy, dated, deficient items or items requiring repair.
•Keep and organise current magazines and news-papers in the library.
•Circulate suitable stock between service areas in accordance with the time-table.
•Refer users to Gwynedd Libraries services including digital services, Gwynedd Council Services and answering users enquiries about general information.
•Hire rooms to individuals or groups. Take names for library activities and keep a reserve list. Contact users to confirm or cancel events.
•Close and open the library and set a security alarm in the absence of the caretaker or duty staff as required.
•Attend staff meetings and training as required and as directed.
•Deal with a wide range of library users including users who may be challenging or difficult.
•Assist with surveys and user questionnaires as required.
•Report IT problems
•An opportunity to participate and support story sessions if desired, and support events held for the public in the library.
•Attend training and personal self-development sessions as required and as directed.
•Attend teams and other working groups of the Library Service, the Department or joint working groups with external services/agencies, as required.
•Responsibility for the development of staff that he/she has responsibility for, and to contribute to the Library Service training programme.

•Ensure compliance with workplace Health and Safety rules in accordance with the responsibilities noted in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Council’s Health and Safety Policy, noting that this is the responsibility of all members of staff when undertaking their duties for users and visitors.
•Operate within the Council’s policies and procedures in relation to equal opportunities and equality.
•Comply with Gwynedd Council’s Policy and Guidelines for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults and that every person employed should be aware of their responsibilities concerning safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
•Responsibility for managing information in accordance with the Council’s information management standards and guidelines. Ensure that personal information is handled in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
•Commitment to reducing the Council’s carbon emissions in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan, and to encourage others to act positively towards reducing the Council’s Carbon Footprint.
•Undertake any other reasonable duties that correspond to the salary level and responsibility level of the post.
Special circumstances
•The post holder will be expected to qualify to the appropriate level in relation to the use of information technology. Training will be provided.
•The main work site is indicated in the job advertisement, but if the need arises, and with both parties’ agreement, there could be circumstances where the post holder will be asked to carry out similar duties in other libraries, within contracted hours, without any additional time or charge for that work.
