Purpose of the post
•Ensure that the people of Gwynedd are at the centre of everything we do.
•Assist with beach supervision. Present information and advice to the public on safety issues. Inform the public regarding tide tables and the weather. Enforce local by-laws and ensure that users of the coast comply with current acts and policies. Provide basic first aid and call for the assistance from the emergency services as required. Complete any maintenance tasks as required.
Responsibility for functions
•Responsibility for all of the safety equipment on the beach and immediately inform the Beaches Maritime Officer of any defects. Responsibility for equipment and apparatus used to complete daily tasks and the uniform provided.
Main duties
•Advise the public on safety issues.
•Assist with day-to-day beach supervision
•Present safety leaflets, or other leaflets for beach users
•Ensure that the beach is free from any risks and litter and ensure that the Line Manager is immediately made aware of any hazards.
•Check all the beach safety equipment and the nearby harbour daily
•Consult daily with the Maritime Beaches Officer and the Harbour Master. Assist as required
•Advise the public on the local by-laws and policies
•Ensure that the appropriate information and resource monitoring forms are completed at the end of every day.
•Assist the emergency services as required.
•Assist harbour officers with daily maintenance work as required
•Assist to ensure that boats in the sea comply with the IRPCS/By-laws and policies and inform the Beaches Maritime Officer of any incidents
•Collect litter and ensure the cleanliness of the beach and nearby lands on a daily basis
•Clean the Maritime Unit's vehicles on a daily basis
•Ensure that the requirements of beach awards are met on a daily basis.
•Ensure the public comply with By-laws and dog restrictions and distribute dog poop bags as required
•Update information on the notice boards as needed, e.g. Tide Tables, water quality results, etc.
•Complete any maintenance tasks as required.
•Responsibility for self-development.
•Ensure compliance with workplace Health and Safety regulations in accordance with the responsibilities noted in the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Council’s Health and Safety Policy.
•Operate within the Council’s equal opportunities and equality policies.
•Responsible for managing information in accordance with the Council’s information management standards and guidelines. Ensure that personal information is treated in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
•Commitment to reducing the Council’s carbon emissions in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan, and to encourage others to act positively towards reducing the Council’s Carbon Footprint.
•Undertake any other reasonable duty which corresponds to the salary level and responsibility level of the job.
•Responsible for reporting any concern or suspicion that a child or vulnerable adult is being abused.
Special circumstances
•On duty every weekend, Bank Holiday and some evenings.
•Work rota arranged in accordance with the instruction/agreement of the local Line Manager.
•The Beach Assistant will be expected to be flexible in accordance with the requirements of the post. One day off a week will be organised via the Line Manager
•Working hours will be 37 hours on average but the hours worked will be dependent on the weather.
