POST TITLE: SCHOOL CARETAKER
PAY SCALE: Local Government Employees Scale – GS3 Scale, points 5-6.
37 hours per week (split shift).
WORKING CONDITIONS: In accordance with Gwynedd Council's National and supplementary local working conditions for NJC staff and manual workers.
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday.

When use is made of the school at night and/or at the end of the week, the caretaker is expected to be present in order to keep track of the safety of the building and to lock it at the end of the day. It is possible to arrange for other members of the school's care and cleaning staff to close some nights.
When overtime is paid to the caretaker he is expected to undertake work around the building.
Holidays:
Holidays to be taken during the school holidays (26.5 days per year, increasing to a maximum of 29.5 days after 5 year of uninterrupted service).
Notice Period:
Written one month in advance.
LINE MANAGER: The Headteacher through the Business and Finance Manager.
Duties:
All members of staff employed at the school will implement all reasonable requests or instructions given by the Headteacher and/or his representative. All members of staff, without exception, should act according to the school's policies.
Purpose:
• Ensure that the people of Gwynedd are central to everything we do.
• Supervise the School buildings to ensure that the building is safe.
• The Caretaker will be responsible for ensuring the effective running of the school ensuring that rooms and services are available and in order for teachers and everyone else who has a right to use them.
• Routinely undertake as part of a work team the cleaning of specified areas on the school premises to ensure that they are kept clean and in a condition that will promote health.

Daily Tasks:
• Unlock all the gates and switch off the alarm system. Unlock all entrance doors and all classroom doors before opening the School in the morning in accordance with the Headteacher's instructions.
• During heating periods as named by the Head, ensure that the heating system works at the right level to ensure that the necessary temperature is reached by the opening time of the School.
• Where an automatic timing mechanism controls the heating system, ensure that the system works as required before opening the School.
• Report to the Headteacher/Business and Finance Manager about any defects observed in individual heaters or in the general heating system.
• Clean and clear all rubbish that makes the place look untidy or could be dangerous, e.g. empty cans, crushed glass or bottles, from every porch and every hard place around the building, before the staff and pupils arrive.
• Empty the rubbish bins that are outside putting the rubbish in plastic bags and
dispose of it as with rubbish collected from outside the building. Place new plastic bags in each bin, if provided. Empty recycling blue boxes into the recycling bins that have been provided.
• Inform the Business and Finance Manager of the need to order paper towels, toilet paper rolls and liquid soap to wash hands as required, taking care of distributing the above.
• Inform the Business and Finance Manager/Headteacher of any damage to school property e.g. defects in fittings or smelly drains etc. that the caretaker cannot deal with.
• At the time of closing the building, ensure that all lights are switched off and heaters / central heating systems are set ready to work, as is appropriate for the weather conditions.
• Ensure that there are no combustible materials too close to heaters etc.
• Prepare the Hall for Morning Service, Concerts, Drama or any other activity.
• Prevent trespassing on the school's land and buildings.
• Opening and closing for evening and weekend activities on mutual understanding, closing and locking the main gates as appropriate at the end of the day.
Weekly/Monthly Tasks:
• Keep drain and gutter traps in a clean condition and clean grease traps every week.
• Monitor the use of electricity, gas and water in accordance with the procedure adopted by the Council. The current system involves recording the reading of each relevant meter each month and calculating how much is used each month on special recording cards.
• Keep boiler buildings in a clean and tidy condition and ensure that there are no combustible materials in them.
• Keep all hard surfaced play areas, parking areas, paths and lanes, petroleum gas stores etc. free of weeds and loose stones and clean up all litter e.g. glass, cans and bottles, paper or other rubbish, leaves, grass clippings etc. and keep them in a tidy condition.
• Clear snow as appropriate and spread rock salt to keep access points safe during snow or ice. Rock salt is provided by the School.
• Inspect the condition of the furniture and the building and give a report to the Business and Finance Manager/Headteacher.
• Re-install ceiling tiles and minor plaster repair work.
• Prepare and paint interior plaster, woodwork and furniture.
• Repair floor and staircase coverings including skirting, stair treads, carpet, lino and thermoplastic.
• Install and repair of small appliances, furniture and broken window boards, all sites.
• Install light bulbs and new fluorescent fittings at each site.
• Reinstall washers, plugs and minor plumbing work, all sites.
• Collaborate with weekly testing of fire equipment, taps, showers and water "sprinklers" if applicable.
• Make sure that the fire prevention equipment is in the appropriate places and inform the Business and Finance Manager if any are empty.
• Answer School security alarm calls.
• Notify the Business and Finance Manager/Headteacher or the Property Department when pipes are frozen and turn off the water.
• Clean extractor fans.
• Clean outside windows.
• Maintain external woodwork and gardens - signs and gates for each site if necessary.
• Maintain and repair minor damage to fences.
• Move furniture from room to room.
• Set the School clocks.
• Direct the work of contractors.
• Keep track of the work of contractors in the School and informing the Business and Finance Manager/Headteacher of any deficiencies that arise.
• Keep an inventory of machinery/maintenance equipment.
• Follow the recognised procedure in relation to flooding, break-ins, accidents or damage.
• The Caretaker is expected to know the location of first aid equipment, important gas and electric drum taps and valves.
• Testing the School’s emergency lighting.
School Minibus
• Transport school pupils to offsite classes.
• Monitor the condition of the bus and arrange maintenance work as required.
• Ensure that the bus has adequate diesel.
• Ensure that the minibus has tax and MOT certificates.
• Clean the school bus.
• Attend a PSV course in order to obtain the relevant minibus license to transport pupils if necessary.
General
• Keep an eye on children's behavior and inform the Headteacher/Deputy Headteacher if there is any problem.
• Responsibility for self-development.
• Comply with the school's Health and Safety Policy and risk assessments as required.
• A commitment to reduce the Council's carbon emissions in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan and to encourage others to take positive action towards reducing the Council's carbon footprint.
