Main Duties
Conditions
The requirements of this post are to be completed in accordance with the provisions of the Salaries and Conditions of School Teachers (Wales) Document and within the range of teachers' duties as noted in that document. The post is also subject to the Work Conditions of School Teachers in England and Wales (The Burgundy Book) and to any relevant conditions agreed upon locally.
The professional duties of the school's Headteacher must be achieved in accordance with the provisions of the Education Acts, Orders and Regulations that are in effect under the Education Acts, the school's instrument of governance, any trust document relevant to the school and any plan prepared or maintained by the Local Authority under Section 48 of the School Standards and Framework (Wales) Act 1998(87).
The duties must be achieved in accordance with any rules, regulations or policies made by the school's governing body that the said body are responsible for; and in the same manner any rules, regulations or policies made by the Local Authority in terms of matters the governing body are not responsible for.
Implement the 'Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership'. Professional characteristics, values and understanding should be promoted and guided, plan work confidently by setting targets to monitor and assess whilst maintaining effective learning environments, where all learners feel safe and confident.
The Headteacher is directly accountable to the Governing Body and the Gwynedd Statutory Head of Education. The post holder is expected to report in writing at least once every term to the school's governing body on matters that are within their field of strategic responsibility and day-to-day management, in accordance with the guidance of the Local Authority.  
• the effective day-to-day management of the school;
• that the school vision is defined clearly, that it is known, shared jointly, coherent and implemented by all stakeholders. 
• the school's effective and efficient management of budgetary and human resources in order to realise the agreed vision is an essential element of the role, as well as the ability to work with others; 
• quality self-evaluation procedures, encourage action based on the results of such evaluations and submit a coherent and accurate description of the school performance to governors and a range of stakeholders; 
• promote a culture of high standards on all levels and that pupil learning is central to planning and managing resources, monitoring, reviewing and evaluation procedures; 
• develop a partnership and work with other providers in the education sector and extend the curriculum by referring directly to the wealth and variety of the communities that serve the school;
• establish effective strategies and procedures, and understand that practices have been established to protect children and staff and co-operate with relevant agencies to protect children;
• ensure that the school protects the values of the Welsh language and follows the Authority's Language Policy.
Professional Responsibilities
The Headteacher is expected to lead the Senior Management Team (SMT) and fulfil the following professional duties:
• Demonstrate firm leadership in order to create the environment that enables teachers to satisfy the 'Practising Teacher Standards' at the end of any induction and continue to satisfy them throughout their teaching career. Staff's professional attributes, values and understanding must be promoted, ensuring that they have the necessary skills in order to plan work confidently by setting targets to monitor and assess the teachers whilst maintaining effective learning environments, where every pupil feels safe and confident.
• Ensure the whole school organisation, strategy and development by providing general strategic leadership and, with others, lead, develop and support the school's strategic direction, vision, values and priorities.
• Consult and communicate effectively with the governing body, staff, pupils, parents and carers, ensuring full accountability.
• Lead and manage change and promote the commitment of stakeholders, ensuring consistency of implementation across the school.
• Work with colleagues and other relevant professionals at the school and beyond the school, including with relevant outside bodies and agencies, in order to establish and maintain a culture that promotes excellence. 
• Work across the school to ensure that the strategic vision leads to agreed objectives and operational plans that will maintain and promote standards and progress.
• Promote a flexible and relevant curriculum across the school and all its sites that respond to the differences in performance, leading to assessment and tracking, and ensuring that data and information is used to drive improvements and track progress effectively.
• Motivate staff and lead and manage the teaching and the learning across the whole school by ensuring, with the exception of special circumstances, that a teacher is allocated in the school timetable to each class or group of pupils.
• Challenge underperformance on all levels and ensure appropriate intervention and follow-up.
• Co-ordinate strategies to induct new staff; lead, manage and develop the workforce, by ensuring an involvement with evaluation strategies, performance management and any staff professional development requirements with full consideration of the expectation with regard to a healthy balance between the other work and commitments of every staff member.
• Promote agreed working relationships at the school and maintain relationships with establishments that represent teachers and other members of the school workforce. 
• Promote the safety and welfare of pupils and staff to ensure good order and discipline amongst pupils and staff.
• Arrange and locate resources at the school, including staff, in an effective educational manner, promote the school's aims and values and target them to improve the educational standards of each pupil. 
• Attend meetings and carry out budgetary procedures that ensure that the school offers value for public money they spend in order to maintain and improve the quality of the education provided and in order to raise the achievement standards of the pupils in our care.
• Develop a successful working relationship with the governing body and develop their role as critical friends. 
• Regularly develop, implement and evaluate the school's policies, practices and procedures, and ensure the whole school remains informed and up-to-date about regulations and legislation.
• Participate in arrangements to evaluate and review your own performance and the performance of other teachers and support staff and, when appropriate, their training and professional development, including induction requirements.
• Decide, in connection with any relevant request, whether a teacher at the school satisfies the standards relevant to his/her current career stage. 
• Ensure that the school remains informed and up-to-date about local and national developments and priorities, and implements and develops them as required.
• Responsibility for self-development.
• Ensure compliance with workplace Health and Safety regulations in accordance with the responsibilities noted in the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Council’s Health and Safety Policy.
• Operate within the Council/school policies in relation to equal opportunities and equality.
• Responsible for managing information in accordance with the Council’s information management standards and guidelines. Ensure that personal information is treated in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
• Commitment to reducing the Council’s carbon emissions in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan, and to encourage others to act positively towards reducing the Council’s carbon footprint.
• Undertake any other reasonable duty which corresponds to the salary level and responsibility level of the job.
• Responsible for reporting any concern or suspicion that a child or vulnerable adult is being abused.
The Headteacher has the right to a reasonable break during the school day, and he/she is expected to arrange that a suitable person is responsible for achieving his/her roles as a Deputy during this break
Special Circumstances. e.g. the need to work unsociable hours, special working arrangements etc.
