LETTER: Oakeley General Manager, Mr A.P Percival in reply to R.W. Williams Transport & General Workers Union re silicosis: "you mention that a local doctor is taking a great interest in the matter. My only comment on this is that the doctor in question is a silly fool and it is a case of ’a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’. He jumps to the conclusion that because he has ascertained that slate contains a large proportion of silica, therefore such silica dust must be injurious to the men breathing it, and conducive to silicosis. If he took the trouble to study the matter more thoroughly he would realise that the conditions under which silica exists as a constituent of slate, are not such as to give rise to silicosis & this is the view taken by the Home Office."
