LETTER: [Lord] Newborough, at Hotel des Iles Britanniques, Paris, to [William] Glynne Griffith. He discusses the building and repairs of tenants’ farm houses; no more than £6000 should be expended and the money must be repaid to the county bankers by the end of the year. He outlines a policy of economy; Bettiss must prove that the quarries will pay. On a visit to Farrer and Atkinson he made over his farm at Aberkin for the £6000 advanced by Coutts. He may find it difficult to contribute his quota, unless it is on the credit of the quarry, if Provis’ high railway estimate is accepted. He enquires about the report of the Assembly of Speculators and Miners and gives instructions as to the course of the road to be made by the contractors of Llanllyfni railway. He will not exchange land with Griffith of Llannor or the people at Plasnewydd. He approves of the planting on Clynnog Mountain and the acquisition of the new nursery ground. He comments on his new keeper and poachers. He comments unfavourably on a political pamphlet edited by Caldecot and notes the triumph of the exponents of Whiggism and Popery at his emigration. He will return to canvass for the election in March. Parish is sober because of the Emperor Alexander’s death. He comments on the building of labourers’ cottages.
