LETTER: Elias Jones, Gorswen, to Messrs Farrars’ and Atkinson, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, informing them that Mr. Horan was keeping the Abbey and grounds in good order but the farm had been losing money, which meant that the demesne lands were not in good order. Mr. Horan’s stock, if seized, then would not fetch £200. It would be best to let the management to Lady [Newborough] as long as she wished Mr. Horan to remain as tenant, as the lands would not be able to pay more than the expenses of upkeep. He includes a balance sheet for the Abbey and for Lady Newborough Sternberg with the trustees. The lot bought by Captain Roberts, now deceased, has been let by Lord Newborough on lease for a term of 21 years at the rent of 8 guineas a year, which was paid yearly to the account of the executors. Captain Roberts, he believed, died insolvent and never had possession. He had asked Mr. Horan to send an account of what he paid and did for Lady [Newborough] when she was in the country to Mr. Pownall. [N.L.W. Glynllivon 2509]
