LETTER: W. Williams, 8 Garnon St., Caernarfon to a friend [David Thomas]. He is pleased to learn that he is enjoying the various amusements and entertainment’s of the "Metropolis". He tells his friend that the World’s Fair referred to in his letter is a annual event and used to be held at the Agricultural Hall when he was there. He used to visit there two or three times a season. He is surprised that his friend cares to visit such places as Middlesex Street and Chapel St. Islington. He recalls a incident that happened to him on Chapel St. when he was mobbed by a crowd of roughs who threw bad potatoes at him. He intends asking his brother-in-law [H. Thomas] to bring him some volumes of Ruskin’s from San Francisco when he is there again. His brother-in-law is in Dunkirk, France at present and is likely to sail for Swansea. He mentions that the books would have to be smuggled or bear marks of having been used to prevent duty being charged which would bring the price to about the same as in London. Asks for titles of the works. Eva Hughes had told him he had received a letter from D. Thomas. Thos. Toleman is not well. A vacancy occurs in the Eastern Ward Seat in the C.C. through J.R. Pritchard being made an Alderman. The candidates are Messrs. Gregory and J.R. Hughes. He himself doesn’t think J.R. Hughes has a chance against Gregory. D. Owens, coal merchant, has died suddenly. The child of Davies, Insurance Collector had burned to death due to negligence on the mother’s part, etc..
