This catalogue consists solely of minute books of the various committees of Portmadog District Council which was established in 1817. Porthmadog, is a seaport town situated between the counties of Caernarfonshire and Meirionnyddshire. The town takes its name from Mr W.A. Maddocks, M.P for Boston, who was responsible for constructing an embankment between 1798 and 1811, which reclaimed the sand dune and bog land areas of Traeth Mawr and Penmorfa Marsh from the sea. Prior to this period the town and district was referred to as Ynyscynhaearn. A harbour at Porthmadog was built between 1821 and 1825 and began a hive of industry as well as the terminus of the Ffestiniog railway. From the 1830s onwards the slate trade flourished and had a large influence on the structure and development of the town. Several quarry companies together with the shipping associated with the iron and brass foundries, which were constructed in this period, meant that Porthmadog became the centre of maritime activity within Tremadog Bay.
The catalogue has been arranged in chronological order and under the headings of the relevant departments. From 1974 onwards the minutes are bilingual.
