X/POOLE/4921

CASE with Mr. Benyon’s opinion on a claim of dower and arrears of Mrs. Peacocke. In 1753 Robert Hughes became the owner of Tyddyn Elias. He then married Miss Jones (now wife of William Peacocke, Esq.). In 1763 the premises were mortgaged. This was paid off by his brother, William Hughes, in 1770. Robert Hughes died in 1764. On his death Tyddyn Elias as well as the Plascoch estate descended to his brother William Hughes. The widow disclaimed her share of the estate at the time. She remarried in 1776. William Hughes died in 1802 and in his will ordered Tyddyn Elias to be sold for paying off his debts, etc.. A solicitor studying the abstract of title felt Mrs. Peacocke should levy a fine to renounce her dower. Mrs. Peacocke and her husband at first agreed but later changed their minds and claimed dower. And other papers.
