DEPOSITIONS taken before Richard Edwards and John Jones, Esq., 2 J.P.’s of Caernarfon, 28 Jan. 1801. Comprising the deposition of William Morris of Rhiw, co. Caernarfon, mariner, that he overtook a man disguised in a cartman’s frock with a Flintshire Welsh accent, claiming to be a native of Ffestiniog. He questioned Wm. Morris about the state of the poor in Caernarfon. The man made revolutionary statements and alleged that 400 quarrymen at Braich y Cafn Quarry armed with pikes were ready to revolt and that the Flintshire colliers would join them and had worked out a plan of campaign against the military. Also a deposition of John Roberts of Brynnodl. He too met the man in the cartman’s frock who had lodged 2 nights at Rhoshirion. He alleged that 400 Braich y Cefn quarrymen armed with pikes were ready to rebel. Also a deposition of John Evans of Penrhyndu who met the same man. The man was taking stock of the coast line and the farm corn stacks. The man asked for work but he believes this was a mere pretence. Endorsed with covering letter 1801, 31 Jan. from Lord Bulkeley of Stanhope Street to the Duke of Portland, asking for instructions.
