LETTER: Richard Matthews, C.M. Minister, Penysarn, Anglesey to the Editor of the Welsh Outlook. Many readers must appreciate the publication of Hugh Jones’s letter in `The Exile’s Corner’. An additional interest to R.M. `a neighbourhood because his brother John Jones of Edern was at one time a barber In Amlwch and was to have been `converted’ at Lletroed Chapel in Penysarn. What was H.J. before he went to America; in his letter he says he taught surveying, navigation and accountancy, together with malting. Good use of English language and a knowledge of husbandry and industry. R. M. recently referred to the Anglesey Connection in the Cloriannydd and received a letter from the great grand-daughter of brother of Hugh Jones. She says Hugh Jones was a clerk to the then Bishop of Liverpool and was on his way from Bangor to Liverpool when he was taken prisoner of war during the American war of Independence. During his imprisonment he wrote a book which so impressed his captor that H. J. obtained his parole and eventually married his captor`s daughter. The correspondent adds that her grandmother occasionally went to stay with John Jones at Edern. The correspondent has the silver buckle of one shoe belonging to John Jones which she would wear years ago on a ribbon. This letter is not for publication but simply interested in them.
