LETTER: Mary Jones to her sister-in-law. Thanks her for her letters. M.J.’s husband, she supposes has not written. She has melancholy news. The recipient who was taken ill on 21 June of a `puetrick fever’ and died on 16 July. He was buried in a convent where all the Protestants are buried. At the expence of his master he wanted for nothing that this part of the world could afford. She has 3 boys who have lost a tender father and she a loving husband. Eldest was 8 on 24 July, the second was 6 on 23 June and the third 3 on 23 May. The Baron has asked has to stay and will give her half what he paid her husband £36 p.a. Although it is a disagreeable situation she will try to stay as long as she can. The Baron has promised to pay for the boys’ schooling. Asks for God’s protection for the recipient’s husband and children and that she should write.
