LETTER: J.B. [Sumner], [Archbishop] of Canterbury, Lambeth to [J. Rigby, Neston, co. Cheshire] with regard to the conferring of a medical degree. He is unwilling to involve himself in a responsibility which ought to rest with those better qualified to undertake it.

COVERING LETTER (22 June [1857]): J. Rigby, Neston, [co. Cheshire] to [Dr] Henry [Thomas]. He is sorry that the Archbishop cannot see his way to exercising the privilege which the law gives him.
