LETTER: R. Bodvan Griffith, Eldon Cottage, Caernarfon to Lord Newborough. In 1843 Mr. Lloyd Roberts brought an action for trespass against William Roberts and Hugh Jones, who were acting on parish instructions in pulling down encroachments on the commons by which paupers gained a settlement in the parish. The vestry ordered them to defend the action, the costs to be borne by the parish. Judgement against the plaintiff was made in 1847 and he went to prison for costs. The writer has still not been paid the costs owing to him by the parish. He asks for Lord Newborough’s intervention.

In accord with normal archival practice in Wales, details of documents are presented in the language of the document. Where details appear in Welsh, then Welsh is the language in which the document is written; where they are in English, the document is in English.
