The White Star cargo/passenger liner Celtic in dock at Liverpool. The first ship to exceed the Great Eastern’s (built 1860) tonnage of 18,915, launched in 1901. 21,035 tons gross. 700’ x 75’. Quadruple expansion engines driving twin screws to a speed of 16 knots. 17,000 tons of cargo, 347 1st class, 160 2nd class and 2,350, 3rd class. Liverpool - New York run. 1914, converted to Armed Merchant Cruiser. 1917 to Trooper and mined in Irish Sea. 1918 torpedoed. 1925 and 1927 in collision. 1928 driven ashore near Cork harbour. Total loss and sold for scrap in 1933.
