LETTER: Edward Chiappini, Cape Town, to Lord Newborough. His brother Ewan has died at the age of 21, and Alexander will not live long. Peter and Lorenzo are both married and have children. He himself has three girls. [Letter continued on 9 May]. He is sending the letter with a son of Mr. Griffith of Bodegen’s who is aboard a ship in the Bay. Family and personal news. The colony is badly governed and the frontiers are invaded by hordes of savages. Many of the farmers have now settled on land outside the British colony and are stopping the caffers from trifling with them. ’No doubt the restless & Warlike Caffer will soon give sufficient provocation for the Boors to commence a War of extermination and then indeed horrid will be the sacrifice of Human life’.

Page Language

In accord with normal archival practice in Wales, details of documents are presented in the language of the document. Where details appear in Welsh, then Welsh is the language in which the document is written; where they are in English, the document is in English.
