LETTER: Wm. Elias, The Abbey, to Lord Newborough, Regent Street, London, expressing the hope that his Lordship’s health would improve. He [originally] enclosed an account of the sums of money received by him, which were to be applied to the building and repairs on the Abbey estates. This account only showed the sums which had passed through his hands and not the total amount expended (this account could only be supplied by Mr. Griffith using his accounts and those of Mr. Pemberton). He had paid off all the carpenters except for those employed by Mr. Pemberton. Mr. Pemberton had refused to arrange a meeting with him. The account should not have been sent to his Lordship until the work was finished. Mr. G[riffith] had prepared an estimate of future building costs. He had noted his Lordship’s suggestions about combining two or more farms into one was only practicable for a few of the farms as it had not been planned for. Very few tenements were left on the Melai and Denbigh property without any building but only one new building had been done at Dolgarrog. If such a thing was to be done there the dispossessing of the old families would create an upset. This course of action on the Gwydir estate had produced an enormous loss to the landowner and no tenant had prospered. But the plan of combining farms could be adopted in some circumstances. He would obey his Lordship’s instructions to write to his Lordship whenever he heard anything which might interest his Lordship. [N.L.W. Glynllivon 4665]
