LETTER: William Elias, Abbey, to W Glynne Griffith, Bodegroes, concerning affairs at the Abbey Estate. He states that he sends a rough draft of the estate accounts to the end of 1822 and complains about the amount of arrears due from many of the tenants, giving details as to how a large proportion of the arrears came about. He has not yet been to Chester as he was expecting Mr. Pemberton since the 17th. He came that week but deferred from sending an account of the expenditure at the Abbey as the carpenter and slater had not finished and a few bills were yet to be paid. The first raft of timber has arrived - with great difficulty because of a storm and a flood in the river. The other raft is secured at Talycafn. He intends going to Chester next week and gives the address of Mr. J Parry, bookseller, Bridge Street. He states that the arrival of the timber has interrupted the planting of the young trees. Owing to the completion of an embankment the flood did not damage the house or the lands. He has received the valuation of the timber from Roger Lewis. He adds that he has sent orders to tenants who are timber carriers and in arrears to fetch the timber to Melai from Rhuddlan by Mr. Pemberton’s direction.
