DRAFT LETTER: William Glynne Griffith, Bodegroes, Pwllheli, to John Maughan, Oswestry, co. Salop., concerning the terms upon which Lord Newborough may have a road granted him through Pengwern land to facilitate access from his Lordship’s slate quarries in pa.[rish] Ffestiniog to the sea. He has been referred to Mr. Maughan by Dr. Wynne, Dr. Wynne and himself having agreed to have the matter settled by indifferent and competent judges. He has told Dr. Wynne that he would object to paying compensation according to the tonnage carried, thinking it would be better to buy the liberty of the road, but if Mr. Maughan thinks it proper, both offers might be made to Lord Newborough. He adds that he sees from a map of the line of the road that a small portion of Mr. Bankes’s property would have to be bought, but he does not see Mr. Bankes objecting to this. He is not aware of any communication with Mr. Bankes touching this matter and as he understands that the management of his property is in Mr. Maughan’s hands he asks whether Mr. Bankes should first be personally addressed or not. He also understands that Mr. Bankes had at one time thought of selling his property in co.Merioneth [Meirionnydd] and that Mr. Bettiss was communicating with him on the matter but he does not know in what state the negotiations are. He begs for an early reply, as the season for active operations in Lord Newborough’s Meirionethshire [Meirionnyddshire] concerns is at hand.
