LETTER: L. Prothero, Police Station, Caernarfon to Lord Newborough, re extremely large size of the police force in the Portmadoc [Porthmadog] Division. The police force was not evenly distributed through the county, the average population to each constable in Caernarfonshire was 1718, in Porthmadog it was only 1250 to each constable. Porthmadog was comparatively free of crime and he gives a list of the convictions for particular offences for the quarter ending March. He also includes a copy of a return of depradators, offenders and suspected persons usually residing in the Porthmadog District for the year 1875. Porthmadog did not pay anything towards the pay and expenses of the Chief Constable and their own Superintendent. The other Divisions of the County contribute upwards of £200 per annum to enable Porthmadog to pay its own police and give the services of the Chief Constable free of charge. Porthmadog, after government contributions and rates, only pays half of the cost of its police force. This has been happening before Captain Pearson was appointed Chief Constable. [N.L.W. Glynllivon 1835]
