LETTER: George Bettiss, Caernarfon, to Messrs. Farers and Co., Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. The only way Mr Madocks’s bill will affect Lord Newborough’s interest is the imposition of tonnage on shipping and the dues on slates. Before the bill be allowed to pass Mr Madocks should explain how his intended improvements would facilitate navigation. The 1807 Act hindered, and did not benefit navigation. He considers that Madocks’ main motive is in securing for himself one fifth of the lands benefitted by the embankment, rather than one fifth of the annual value. This does not affect Lord Newborough, but will other landowners. The monopoly of fishing would affect the labouring class. The wharfage dues would not exceed those at Caernarfon, but these latter are being revised as they are held to be exorbitant. Magistrates should have to verify Mr Madocks’s bye laws. [N.L.W.
