LETTER: Thomas Dyke, 3 Lennox Place, Brighton, to Lord Newborough discussing an ’unfortunate turn’ in respect of the Schroder Trust. He felt that the best course of action, if it could be accomplished, would be to invest the money and then fall back on the indemnities. The whole £2000 must be invested. He felt that it was his duty to his Lordship and the other co-trustee to inform them that he was unable to advance any portion of his quota of that sum. He was bound to pay off the sum of £500 being an outstanding debt. He expected a division of the profits of his profession for the last year and this had generally realised more than £500 after deducting monthly instalments to liquidate household expenses but he did not have any further source of income or anything to pledge as security. He was about to put down’ his ’carriage’ for economy sake. He did not know what was going on in the family. In a letter Roberts had said that he believed they should receive the full amount of the investment in about 3 months. He had confidence in Messrs. Shearman and Slater, solicitors of Great Tower St., City, [?London] to get them out of this difficulty. He would never again undertake a trustee or executorship and would give his age, 72 the following month, as his excuse. [N.L.W. Glynllivon 2709.]
