LETTER: R.D. Brailli Ltd, ship and insurance brokers, 60 Bute St., Cardiff, to Captain John Hughes, San Fransisco, acknowledging receipt of mail which confirms that he was sailing on the Tamara. They were deeply sorry that the propects of his getting command were so unfavourable and felt that his taking second officer was uncomfortable in its aspects but perhaps for the best. The ending of the war had made business people and ship-owners uncertain and they had been unable to help him to get a ship the other side. Things had, however, improved and they offer any help, they were trying Mr. Young of James Stewart and Co., Mr. Garthwaite, the owners of the Juteopolis and 3 other ships. They ask for a letter from San Fransisco letting them know if he had succeeded in getting a ship. They were arranging to pay Mrs. Hughes the balance of his account as far as they were able to get the figures from his porterage account, the balance could be adjusted when he got home. In view of his service wages would be paid to September. They were not likely to purchase further tonnage under the present circumstances. They were pleased he had got £30 for the chronometer.
