COFNODION A PHAPURAU BWRDEISDREF CAERNARFON
RECORDS AND PAPERS OF THE BOROUGH OF CAERNARFON
Mae’r cofnodion a restrir yn y catalog hwn wedi tarddu o Gyngor Fwrdeisdref Caernarfon. Gosodwyd rhai ar adnau gan Glerc y Dref a swyddogion eraill Cyngor y Fwrdeisdref, a daeth eraill i ofal yr Archifdy trwy law y diweddar Mr. Kenrick Evans, Bryndisgwylfa, Caernarfon. Yr oedd Mr. Evans, yr hanesydd lleol nodedig o Gaernarfon, wedi derbyn y cyfrifoldeb yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd o fwrw golwg dros y papur wast a ddeuai o Swyddfeydd y Cyngor, a llwyddodd i achub llawer o ddogfennau pwysig. Gosodwyd y rhain yn yr Archifdy o bryd i’w gilydd. Gan fod y dogfennau wedi cyrraedd bob yn dipyn nid oedd yr hen gatalogau a baratowyd yn hawdd i’w defnyddio, ac ymddangosodd dogfennau sy’n perthyn i’r un gyfres hwnt ac yma. Am hyn, penderfyhwyd ad-drefnu manylion am yr holl ddogfennau yn y casgliad er mwyn hwyluso cyfeirio atynt, a dyma’r hyn a geir yn y gyfrol hon. Ni newidiwyd y rhifau catalogio, ac oherwydd hyn nid ydynt yn dilyn yn y drefn naturiol. Os oes angen gweld ym mha drefn, ac o ba ffynhonell y daeth eitemau i’r Archifdy, gellir cyfeirio at yr hen gatalogau sydd yn dal ar gael yn Archifdy Caernarfon.
Nid oedd trefn wreiddiol yr archifau yn amlwg pan y catalogiwyd y dogfennau yn y lle cyntaf, ac felly mae’r drefn a fabwysiedir yma yn drefn artiffisial a fydd, gobeithio, yn hwyluso dod o hyd i ddogfennau o ddiddordeb. Serch hynny, lle ceir bwndeli gwreiddiol mae’r cynnwys yn cael ei rhestru efo’i gilydd.
The records listed in this catalogue originated with the Borough of Caernarfon. Some were deposited directly by the Town Clerk or other Borough Council officers, while others came to the Record Office from Mr. Kenrick Evans, Bryndisgwylfa, Caernarfon. Mr. Evans, the noted local historian of Caernarfon, took on the responsibility during the Second World War of sorting through the salvage emanating from the Council Offices, and he located and preserved many important items, which were deposited over the years in the Record Office. Since the documents arrived in small consignments the old catalogues prepared as the documents were accessioned are not easy to consult, with items from single series appearing here and there over the pages. Because of this it has been decided to re-arrange the entries in this present format, to aid easier reference. The catalogue numbers have not been changed and so are not sequential. If searchers need to ascertain in what order and from which source documents were deposited in the Record Office they may consult the original catalogues at the Area Record Office, Caernarfon.
The original archival order of the collection was not readily apparent when the documents were first accessioned, and the arrangement adopted here is therefore artificial and is contrived in the hope that documents may be more easily located. Where original bundles, etc. were identifiable, the contents of such bundles were listed together.
