X/POOLE/6665

LETTER: William Poole writing from Philadelphia to his uncle and aunt in Wales. He thanks them for their kindness during his stay in Wales. On the voyage back they met a hurricane. The ship suffered considerable damage and the crew and passengers gave themselves up as lost until a passing vessel sighted them and took them aboard. Gives his opinion of America, the prices and wages there. Remarks that there are many Welsh people there - about 1000 Welshmen arrived in New York this summer. On one vessel of 250 passengers, all were ill. He has now got a job as clerk to a merchant which involves considerable travel. Sends his regards to his mother and brothers and sisters.

Page Language

In accord with normal archival practice in Wales, details of documents are presented in the language of the document. Where details appear in Welsh, then Welsh is the language in which the document is written; where they are in English, the document is in English.
