CASE WITH THE OPINION of Mr. Bell of Lincolns Inn in a tithe dispute. In 1784 the Rev. Hugh Humphreys was presented to the living of Llansadwrn, co. Anglesey. As there was no glebe land the Rector lived outside the parish of Llangefni, but performed the parish duties himself. The tithes are let, according to the custom there, by letting the tithes of groups of farms, not by letting the tithes of his own farm to each farmer individually. In 1802 the Rev. Maurice Lewis and his attorney Grindley proposed to take the whole of the tithes of the parish of Llansadwrn. The agreement was never committed to writing. In 1805 Maurice Lewis declared his intention of giving up the tithes. Grindley then paid the next rent. Now Grinffley refuses to give up the tithes during the incumbent’s life but is insisting upon enforcing the verbal agreement made.

Page Language

In accord with normal archival practice in Wales, details of documents are presented in the language of the document. Where details appear in Welsh, then Welsh is the language in which the document is written; where they are in English, the document is in English.
