LETTER Hugh Jones, Augusta, Georgia to his brother John Jones, Pen y Bryn, Edern. Acknowledges receipt of parent’s letter and the recipient’s letter dated London 5 May 1791. Death has made a breach In H.Js family. Harry after a ten week illness has died. Polly was taken sick the same day and H.J, Harry and Polly had dumb ague. The sickness was so general that hardly a family in the neighbourhood escaped. They had no one with them the night he died 8 Dec. 179[1]. [1792 In document] - to be recorded in the family Bible. Harry’s remains were interred in his Grandfather’s peach orchard where two or three of his second cousins are buried. He describes the funeral-and the amentations of the whites and blacks. His wife is still very ill. As they now live 60 miles nearer the sea and a post established they will hear oftener from each other. H.J. is a teacher in the Richmond Academy. His salary is £50 p.a. He lives in an apartment at the Academy he also has a garden and half an acre of ground. They have the privilege of sending their children to the school gratis. His wife not able to get out of bed. Hopes the change of air and water will do her good. They are blessed with another child Patsy born 11 Jan. 1792. They left Wilkes to be weaned as his wife is so low. President of the Academy is from Pensylania his name is Rogers a single man. He is a master of learned languages. H.J. hopes to improve under him. H.J. has a notion of going to Charleston to see Jack Price. His wife has never seen the sea in her life. He undertook to farm but has been unlucky. His wheat, Indian Corn. He was in a Law Suit. He has sold his lands to pay his debts. He also has a tract of woodland which cannot be recovered because the Indians are troublesome. It may be profitable to his children. He longs to see them in America.
