Donald Mckay (1810-1880) builder of American ships of revolutionary design. Born in Nova Scotia, Mckay spent his early years in the shipyards of New York before moving to Boston in 1840 where he built some of the finest vessels ever built including Flying Cloud, Sovereign of the Seas, Lightning, James Baines, Champion of the Seas and Donald Mckay - the last four especially built for James Baines, the Liverpool shipowner whose Black Ball Line specialisted in the Australia trade.
