XS3292/1-2

Twisted rope straw partition on the second floor of the Willow Pattern Cafe, High Street, Caernarfon, discovered during renovation work 1987-1988. This example has been dated to c.1800 by the County Council’s Conservation Architect Mr. Jeff St. Paul and is one of the very few recorded on mainland Gwynedd. The straw used was usually barley (but not always) and was twisted into a rope by hand, or on wooden handles held between two people. It is about 1" in diameter. The rope was suspended vertically or horizontally, after which the rope straw partitions would be plastered. The builder has been asked to put up plasterboard across the wood to preserve the rope straw.

In accord with normal archival practice in Wales, details of documents are presented in the language of the document. Where details appear in Welsh, then Welsh is the language in which the document is written; where they are in English, the document is in English.
